Layout

I suspect this shall be the most maddening phase of the book. I'm doing a relatively simple one-column digest book, with art in places. But I've already found the indexing in Word is off by one number for some reason, and I can't just start numbering pages from one a couple pages into the document. I'm sure there's a way to do it, but Microsoft has done it's damnedest to hide it.

In the end, I'll give it my best shot. If I can't get the numbering to work right, I just might remove the index. While I know some people like them, I never use them, and the book will be relatively short. I'm not going to frustrate myself for hours on something I don't need.

Do you have Photoshop or other similar image editor with text layers?

If so, you can create custom page layouts with 'place holders' for text and others for images, as well as having border elements, etc. through the use of Layers.

It will give you more exact results and saves sanity, as Word can be truly maddening.

Barring that, in Word, use a 4 or 6 column page template for each page, and then use Text Boxes to place text around art and vice versa. If careful one can have stacks of text boxes and art, for some pretty sophisticated effects, but again, it isn't friendly about it. :)

If you'd like some help, let me know.

Best,
