UK/US superimposed map

I just thought this was interesting. Think about how much history has happened in the UK. Now see how big it is compared to the US. I bet more than half of the US states are each bigger than all the British Isles combined.

100 years is a long time in America, 100 miles is a long distance in Britain: Different perspectives. On the other hand, if the USA stays around for the next 900 years, I'm sure it will accumulate a lot more history.

And yet Great Britain is still one of the most influential voices in the free world. Size ain't everything ;).

Your graphic could be used to make several of my hobby horse points: how geography is misleading, how most DnD games are unmistakeably American, how American history is also part of British history, how I wish gamers would take a few tentative steps outside England, or, even better, Europe, how that Anglophone phenomenon called fantasy, tout court, is based on England imagining America as a primitive or mythic England...

I can't remember who it was that showed how you could find all of Middle Earth in an afternoon's walk across the Midlands, winding up in Manchester/Mordor. But just imagine how many other worlds there are out there, if we only take care to inhabit our own corner of this one attentively.

I always like these map on map. Helps me get an idea of the scope of things. And like Jason said, size ain't everything.

it's good to see you here! Funny thing about these blog posts - they have long lifespans. That's the main thing that bothers me about G+: miss a day and it's very unlikely you'll find out what you missed in the pile-up of posts.

omg this is embarrassing. I mistook your post for one of my own. How does this happen?
