Love this series, Dan (although I'm going to have to call "dibs" on my favorite hero, the Golden Age Sandman). Are you building these characters as starting heroes, giving them a certain number of advances, or just eyeballing them?

I'm just eyeballing them. It's not really possible to build any famous superhero as a starting character.

One way to see how many advances a character has is to check his LIFE. For every advance, LIFE goes up by one. Powerful characters start at 15, Quick characters start at 10.

For example, Batman is Quick, yet has 17 LIFE, so he has 7 advances. This makes sense to me, since he's a very experienced character.

Powergirl has 6 advances, almost all of which are in Invulnerability and Super Strength. Since she's at Superman power levels, that makes sense to me, as well.
